HOANG SU PHI
A must-see attraction in Vietnam

Hoang Su Phi is an upland district of Ha Giang Province, Vietnam and also is one of Ha Giang’s attractions. The North is contiguous with China, the West is contiguous with Xin Man district, the East is contiguous with Vi Xuyen district, the South East and the South is contiguous with Bac Quang and Quang Binh districts in the same province.

1. Where is Hoang Su Phi
Located in the west of Ha Giang, Hoang Su Phi has the advantage of being on the tourist route of Lao Cai - Ha Giang - Cao Bang. Along with that, pristine and spectacular natural climate with primaeval forests, terraced fields, rivers and streams of Chay river, Shan Tuyet ancient tea trees, Tay Con Linh peak, Chieu Lau Thi peak 2,400m higher than sea level, and a lot of relics, heritages… These are great potentials and advantages to develop Hoang Su Phi tourism, especially ecotourism and community culture.

2. Ethnic Minority Groups in Ha Giang ​
Hoang Su Phi is located on the upper stream of Chay River, mainly mountains and hills with a high slope and divided by many streams. This is a long-term settlement of people of 12 ethnic groups. In there, the Nung, Dao, Tay, Mong and La Chi people are the majority. Because it is located on the road connecting the eastern and northwestern regions, the magnificent natural landscape and unique cultural features are preserved by the community here, Hoang Su Phi has a lot of potential for development, especially community ecotourism.

3. The most beautiful sights in Ha Giang
Coming to Hoang Su Phi, crossing the heaven gate Km17 Bac Quang - Hoang Su Phi route, the first thing that made a strong impression to visitors was the immense space that opened the view of Tay Con Linh mountain range hidden in the dew, the primeval forests lie between the rivers and streams at the head of Chay river and the Silver river, the Shan Tuyet ancient tea fields, the vast terraced fields on the slopes.
In particular, if lucky, visitors can see and experience the extremely mysterious and unique rituals of the local people such as the Festival of Passing Year, Rice soul call ceremony, fortune-telling- dancing ceremony of Dao ethnic people, Forest spirit worshiping ceremony of Nung ethnic group, Khu Cu Te Ceremony of La Chi ethnic group, Mong people's Gau Tao festival.

In the season of ripe rice, terraced fields in Hoang Su Phi (Ha Giang) are like a beautiful girl on a winding stream, showing off soft curves with mountains and forests. Every year, from the end of September to early October, tourists come to Ha Giang crowdedly. They do not want to miss the beautiful scenery when rice on terraced fields turns shiny yellow. One of the roads that attract the visitors is the land of Hoang Su Phi, located at the foot of Tay Con Linh peak. 

Standing in front of immense scenery, visitors will be surprised when watching thousands of terraced fields spread all the way, winding around the hillsides and mountains. The clouds and sunbeams here are like drawing the painting of the golden season. The new fragrance of rice warms people's hearts. In addition to taking photos and sightseeing, visitors coming here in this time can experience activities such as catching fish in the field, harvesting rice and making cereals. Moreover, you can view the ceremonies related to agricultural beliefs such as the new rice worshipping ceremony and the warehouse closing ceremony of the local people.

To Hoang Su Phi, do not forget to try the specialities of this land. Mouse meat is one of them. If the Kinh people consider pork to be a daily dish, for La Chi people, it is mouse meat. They can make mice into delicious dishes such as grilling, stir-frying and drying on stoves.

4. The best time to visit Hoang Su Phi - Ha Giang, Vietnam
Being a highland district, the terrain is strongly divided, Hoang Su Phi has many different sub-regions of climate, soil and natural landscapes. So when travelling to Hoang Su Phi, you can and choose a suitable tour.

  • Spring is the time when Hoang Su Phi's unique festivals are held. This occasion is also the season for photographing peach, pear and tea plantations.
  • Between April and June is the rice planting season. Coming to Hoang Su Phi on this occasion tourists can admire the scenic beauty of Hoang Su Phi terraced fields during the pouring season.
  • From the middle of September every year, it's the beginning time of the rice crop in the northern mountainous provinces in general and Hoang Su Phi terraced fields in particular. This is the best time to travel Hoang Su Phi, suitable for taking photos of terraced fields spreading on the slopes.  ​
  • At the end of the year, when the winter comes, if you are not afraid of the cold, you can go to Hoang Su Phi to explore Tay Con Linh and Chieu Lau Thi to hunt clouds and hunt snow.
